Field Manager, Fine Gardening

The Field Manager position at Parterre provides creative opportunities as only a small-business allows, with the behind-the-scenes support of an operationally excellent model. We are searching for a fine gardening professional who is interested in managing their own unique book of work. This individual will have a proven track record in the horticulture industry with extensive personnel management, daily and seasonal prioritization, and intimate client relation experience.
To be a successful part of our management structure, one must possess the ability to first prioritize the needs of 30-40 properties, simultaneously manage several gardeners at once, and maintain a high level of professional communication with clients, gardeners, and superiors. Each one of our Field Managers has their own unique management style, and this is paired with our client’s individual needs.
Primary Responsibilities
- Manage 30-40 client properties and all seasonal garden maintenance needs, including but not limited to container planting, landscape management, and holiday décor
- Team Management
- Ability to apply creative solutions for complex problems
- Clear, concise reporting to upper management regarding garden/resource/staffing needs
- Identify sales opportunities to enhance clients’ spaces and work with sales team to see sale through from conceptual design to completion.
- Provide on-site training and ongoing mentoring
- Maintain professional and frequent communication with clients and peers
- Ensure and oversee a high level of detail and horticultural expertise
- Manage and provide oversight of all sub-contracted work on properties as well as be able to manage and oversee client budgets
- Continuously contribute to and promote the Parterre brand to clients and industry peers
- Manage and carefully document all products sold to each client
Requirements
- Love of the outdoors and urban spaces
- Strong sense of aesthetics, color, and balance
- Background in art and design, while not required, is appreciated
- Individuals with horticulture or related field experience are encouraged to apply.
- 3+ years tending perennial gardens, caring for shrubs, pruning trees to 12’, personnel management
- Basic working knowledge of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) required
- Strong work ethic, demonstrable ability in prioritization of self/others required
- Ability to work a full day with physical demands
- Ability to lift/carry up to 40 pounds
- Current MA driver’s license, clean driving record required
- Professionalism, effective communication (in all forms), attention to detail, and a passion for learning is of utmost importance

This is a full-time, seasonal position (late February-December). The successful Gardener at Parterre is interested in all aspects of environmental horticulture from: the art of container design, the science of urban landscapes, the maintenance of perennials in traditional and nontraditional gardens, pest and disease identification, integrated pest management, and promotion of sustainable practices in the green industry.

The Gardener position at Parterre is the real practitioner of preserving very thoughtfully designed landscapes and promoting best horticulture in some of the most diverse gardens and arboreta in our geographic area. Our gardeners are constantly creating, maintaining, and sustaining gardens for clients who truly appreciate our professional level of artistry. Given the fast pace, and competitive environment, one must be able to take direction well, while maintaining a deep desire to think independently, creatively solve problems on the run, and be the eyes and ears of the garden.
Responsibilities
- Tending perennial gardens, maintaining shrubs, pruning trees up to 12’
- Stewards of assigned gardens, developing close client relationships
- Clear, concise reporting to Field Managers re: garden/resource/staffing needs
- Sense of ownership in your custom garden assignments
- Collaboration with others at Parterre, constant desire to learn and share knowledge

As a Horticulturist at Parterre’s Urban Gardens Division, you will work in a fast-paced environment where every detail is important. We specialize in exceptional container design, but also care for all aspects of our client’s spaces – from trees and shrubs to perennials, hardscape, fountains, pest management, and holiday decor. Our urban gardeners work in some of the most beautiful spaces in Boston, primarily in private residences in Back Bay, Beacon Hill, and the South End.
Responsibilities
- Maintenance of urban gardens and roof decks
- Care of woody, perennial, annual plant material
- Container planting and maintenance
- Create show-stopping plantings and displays each season
- Mulching, fertilization, composting, cleaning of hardscape
- Creative decorating for Halloween and winter holidays

The Project Manager position at Parterre is to work closely with Field Directors, Field Managers, Parterre Sales Director and fellow gardeners to ensure the highest quality garden care for our client’s properties and provides an opportunity to support and train a small team of gardeners.
Role
- Manage special projects including but not limited to, clean ups, deadheading, fertilization, mulching, pest control, planting, pruning, watering, and container plantings with a high level of detail and horticultural expertise
- Manage multiple gardeners and provide on-site training
- Consistent, complete, and concise reporting upon completion of special projects
- Daily debris pickups
Experience
- Candidates should possess strong background in horticulture, working knowledge of annual and perennial plant materials utilized in bed plantings and seasonal containers
- General working knowledge of lawn care, IPM, irrigation, arbor care, proper pruning practices
- Container design and installation
- Exterior and interior holiday décor installation
- Experience working on residential landscapes is preferred
- Experience overseeing crews and managing field work
- Effective communicator (both written and oral)
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license required
- Job requires physical stamina associated with many garden tasks, such as plant installations, mulching, weeding, hauling debris in a variety of weather conditions
- Ability to lift 40 lbs
- Required to write daily field journal entries reviewed by clients for online database system
- Strong attention to detail and excellent communication and organizational skills a must
